FAQs

Tachometer Hourmeter

Will the Tachometer/Hourmeter work on my engine?

EFMS100 Tachometer/Hourmeter will work on any engine using a spark plug.
You simply need to wrap the sensor wire around the spark plug wire and set the display unit according your engine ignition:
– 2 sparks per revolution
– 1 spark per revolution
– 1 spark per 2 revolutions

Temperature measurements

Is my EGT/CHT (/thermocouple temperature sensor) “J type” or “K type”?

The vendor of the probe should be able to answer this question.
Standard CHTs are J type. Standard EGTs are K type.
“Setting = K type” with “probe = J type” will display higher temperatures
“Setting = J type” with “probe = K type” will display lower temperatures

Is my EGT/CHT (/thermocouple temperature sensor) “grounded” or “ungrounded”?

The vendor of the probe should be able to answer this question.
You can however check this with an ohmeter: ungrounded probes have both wires isolated from the sensing part of the probe.
EFMS100 will work with both types “refer to the installation manual” . Grounded thermocouples are the most common.
Ungrounded probes can help on motors with very high electric noise.

Wiring

Is it possible to extend the “link cable” (cable between sender unit and display unit)?

For memo, the cable provided is 1.8m (6 feet) long.
A reasonable (a few meters/yards maximum) cable extention is OK.
The cable should be made of 2 conductors (for power + data) + 1 shield (for ground).
This is how analog stereo audio cables are make (just replace power and data by left channel and right channels).
The connector on the display unit is a standard 3.5mm diameter (sometimes called 1/8 inch) stereo audio connector (this type of connector is used on most stereo headset).
Gold plated connectors are always preferred.
